November 22, 2024 The city of Hamburg aims to accelerate the expansion of charging points for electric vehicles. By 2030, there are expected to be 10,000 such stations. Currently, there are about 1,700 municipal charging points located on streets or public parking spaces. In addition, around 100 private charging points are available in public areas.
Private Providers Join the Expansion Effort
Most public charging points in Hamburg are currently operated by Hamburg Energiewerke, a municipal company. In the future, several private providers will also be involved. Alongside Hamburg Energiewerke, the companies Enercity Mobility, Eze.network, Qwello Deutschland, Ubitricity, and Vattenfall will contribute to the expansion of the charging network. On Friday, these companies signed concession agreements at Hamburg’s city hall. These agreements grant them the right to install 500 charging points each in the city over the coming years. At the same time, they are required to adhere to a strict implementation schedule.
No Cherry-Picking in Locations
To ensure fair distribution, each company is obligated to operate charging points in the city’s outlying areas as well. According to the Economic Authority, the exact locations were determined by an algorithm to ensure the infrastructure is developed where it is most needed. This marks the first time Hamburg has signed concession agreements for charging points, with more contracts expected to follow.
Hamburg Leads in E-Mobility
According to the Economic Authority, Hamburg boasts the highest proportion of electric vehicles nationwide. More than seven percent of the city’s vehicle fleet consists of fully electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. The locations of existing and planned charging points can be accessed online via the Geoportal Hamburg.
