Gerolstein, Germany

With the introduction of 42 new charging stations at currently 20 locations, the Verbandsgemeinde Gerolstein has taken a significant step towards environmentally friendly mobility as the first Verbandsgemeinde in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The charging stations are installed in the local communities of Basberg, Birgel, Duppach, Feusdorf, Hohenfels-Essingen, Kalenborn-Scheuern, Kerschenbach, Mürlenbach, Neroth, Nohn, Ormont, Reuth, Scheid, Stadtkyll, Steffeln, Üxheim-Niederehe, and Steffeln-Auel, as well as in the cities of Gerolstein and Hillesheim.

“This means that the Verbandsgemeinde Gerolstein has nearly comprehensively invested in municipal charging infrastructure,” says economic developer Stefan Mertes. “With the steadily increasing share of electric vehicles, the demand for public charging infrastructure is also growing. The introduction of these charging stations is therefore a clear sign of our commitment to a more sustainable future and offers a user-friendly charging solution for our citizens and visitors.”

The charging stations offer a charging power of up to 22 kW, either with an integrated cable (11 kW) or with a separate cable. They are equipped with parking sensors to detect availability status and allow users to start the charging process without prior registration using an EC card, credit card, or Apple Pay. Electric vehicle owners can activate the charging stations via the Qwello app or use their EC or credit card to start the charging process. Common charging cards from providers such as Mainova, Shell Recharge, TankE, DKV, BMWCharge, Mercedes me, AUDI Etron, Volkswagen ELLI, EnBW, ADAC, and over 200 other roaming partner cards are also usable for billing. The Qwello mobile app additionally provides a reservation function for a charging point for 15 minutes.

The investment in the Verbandsgemeinde-wide charging infrastructure amounts to approximately 300,000 euros and is supported by the federal funding program “Charging Infrastructure on Site.” The cities and local communities each contribute around 60,000 euros. Qwello Deutschland GmbH operates the charging stations. The established company has developed and built the charging solutions itself.
