First Qwello charging station installed in Berlin

Berlin, Germany

May 2, 2023

The Munich-based charging infrastructure provider Qwello is now also active in the capital. Qwello’s first public charging stations in Berlin have been completed on Cecilienstrasse in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district and are due to go into operation shortly.

However, the announcement does not confirm when exactly the charging stations can be used. We remember: When Qwello unveiled its first AC columns in Frankfurt in September 2022 , the columns were not yet freely usable even several weeks after the press event. Qwello makes it clear in the accompanying press release that things will be different in Berlin: The charging stations on Cecilienstrasse were completed “after a pleasingly short planning and approval period in close coordination with the Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer and Climate Protection”. In Frankfurt, on the other hand, the approval process has dragged on since 2021 .

A slightly modified version of Qwello’s own charging station is being used in Berlin: It is significantly lower, only about shoulder height – in contrast to the previous columns, which are as high as a traffic sign. However, nothing has changed in the structure with display, Type 2 socket for three-phase charging with 22 kW and the integrated Type 2 cable for 11 kW. We already presented the Qwello concept in 2020  .

The announcement does not mention any specific expansion targets or timetables for additional Qwello charging stations in the capital. It only states in general terms: “Qwello is committed and participating as a third-party provider in the further expansion of the charging infrastructure on public roads in Berlin.”
